Applications Open for the 2021 Goldin Global Fellows: Are You Ready to GATHER?

Global Alumni Network Co-Facilitator

As the Goldin Institute launches another Global Fellows program this year, I am excited to reconnect with my counterpart, Lissette, to co-facilitate this new cohort of Fellows using the GATHER Platform to convene creative and dedicated grassroots leaders from around the world. The 2021 Goldin Global Fellows program will begin on August 9, 2021 and will offer participants the opportunity to meet weekly with other grassroots leaders working on community-driven social change through December 15th 2021. Upon completing the Fellows program, participants will join a global network of community leaders from twenty countries who meet monthly for ongoing learning and collaboration.

Lissette and I both participated in the inaugural Goldin Global Fellows programme in 2018. Lissette Mateus Roa works on prevention of child violence in Colombia and recently embarked on leveraging technology in helping parents and teachers with emotional management. Her project ConSiente was recently selected as one of the best initiatives from the Colombian ICT Ministry Contest for coming up with this mobile app idea. Lissette attributes her ongoing motivation to keep fighting for the rights of children to her experience in the Global Fellow program and the accompanying course on the GATHER Platform.

Thanks to the program and what I learned on GATHER, I found a “new path above all circumstances” to travel as a social leader. It changed my way of thinking about my leadership and the communities I work with. I learned that there is a lot of wisdom in us and no matter who you are, where you are or what you have, keep dreaming, believing and doing." -- Lissette Mateus Roa, Colombia

Like Lissette, I joined the Global Fellows program in 2018 eager to connect with global peers and acquire tools for strengthening my social work. A year later after the program, I courageously embarked on a lifetime mission to the North Pole — joining Robert Swan and climate activists to learn more about Climate Change and its impacts on the environment. As a result of this voyage, I am now the ClimateForce Ambassador to Tanzania and I continue to inspire environmental solutions for my country - Tanzania.

“I wouldn’t have the impetus to go North if it was not for the shift in paradigm I experienced as a consequence of my participation in the GATHER course, which propelled me to rediscover my mission — inspiring young influencers to promote convenient solutions to climate-change impacts.” — Yusuph Masanja, Goldin Global Fellow, Tanzania

The 2021 Global Fellows program will blend live virtual meet-ups with access to online curriculum for community leaders which participants can pursue at their own pace on the Goldin Institute’s GATHER platform. GATHER is both a mobile platform for shared learning and a curriculum for people who want to build on the talents of their neighbors and the assets of their communities to make real and lasting change. Fellows should expect to spend approximately 2-3 hours per week for the 18 weeks of the Fellows program.

If you know anyone working to make a positive difference in their community and wishing to learn and connect with other grassroots leaders globally, please invite them to apply to join this growing network of community of practice.

GATHER is an online platform that allows groups to learn, explore and work collaboratively in ways that incorporate the local knowledge and wisdom earned by applying ideas in the real world as part of the pedagogy and design. We built GATHER to translate how communities successfully learn and work together on the ground to the digital environment so that we can all collaborate in tackling shared concerns across boundaries.

Designed to be mobile, GATHER provides groups continuous access to core social change concepts, peer-to-peer discussion and shared reflection as a community of practice, making it possible for all of us to grow as leaders of community-led social change. Through GATHER, folks from many different walks of life who share a common question or aspiration, especially those too often left out, can convene to learn and work together. Only together can we see the system, and change it.

While GATHER is a software platform, it is also a digital embodiment of our mission and philosophy: that when you design for the margins, learn and work together, invite everyone to contribute and give a voice to those closest to the issue, communities of practice can find creative solutions for real and lasting change.

The GATHER platform and approach to shared learning is based on the Goldin Institute’s 18 years of experience supporting community driven social change in over 50 countries across the globe. Through that experience, we know that real and lasting change requires us to invite everyone to contribute their insights and talents and build on what’s already working in our communities.
