Yuraima Becerra Vargas

2023 Goldin Global Fellow (Spanish)

Yuraima is a Venezuelan educator and political activist for human rights. Due to the unprecedented humanitarian, social, and economic crisis in the country, the conditions of education have become much more precarious. Because of this, she started her work in a community called El Saladito, where people live in extreme poverty and there is a presence of illegal armed groups trying to recruit children. With the aim of protecting them and ensuring that they do not fall into criminal groups, and to provide them with a different vision for their future, she started Saturday support groups for academic tutoring. Additionally, she works on other topics such as identifying the community’s weaknesses and strengths to progress in problem-solving and continue fostering the importance of education in childhood.
